From Lewis to Detroit: Ties Over the Atlantic
CNES Council Chambers, Sandwick Road, Stornoway, May 16th 2011, 19:30 - 22:30
Tasglann nan Eilean Siar (Hebridean Archives) would like to invite you to an evening event to be held in the Council Chambers on the 16th May focusing on the historical links between the Western Isles and North America, with a particular emphasis on Detroit.
The evening will look at the reasons for individuals’ emigration in the late 19th and early 20th century, their lives in North America, the reasons for their return to their homelands and the ongoing relationships. The event will introduce the primary source materials that help to tell this story but more importantly will include an invited panel session where individuals will share their own stories and experiences.
The evening will be chaired by Councillor Kenny Maciver and, as well as including an informal discussion with a panel consisting of people who have different ties with the city and the island, there will also be a talk by genealogy expert Bill Lawson on emmigration from Lewis to North America. Records belonging to the Lewis Society of Detroit, which are held at Stornoway library, will be on display.
The evening starts at 7.30pm and we look forward to seeing you there. Please circulate this to anyone else who you think may be interested in this event.
