OK, it's silly season, but this one tickled me a little, as I had never heard of Pictavia, a new tourist attraction in Angus. The centre is having an event on July 9th, and whilst the face painting and all that is not really my cup of tea (I'd only end up looking like Mel Gibson!), the centre itself looks well worth a visit for a day out. If you’ve ever wished you could escape from the stresses and strains of modern life by going back to the days when the county of Angus was home to the Picts, make a date in your diary to visit Pictavia on Saturday, July 9.
On that day, you can come along and become involved in demonstrations of the skills needed to survive in the days when tea had to be hunted down and cooked over an open fire, battles were a fact of life rather than a computer game and painting your face with blue woad was completely acceptable!
“We’ll be teaching visiting children how to play the games that kept youngsters in Pictish encampments amused, telling stories and, of course, providing face painting lessons – Pictish style,” said Cara Roberts of Pictavia, the award-winning visitor attraction on the outskirts of Brechin, just off the A90.
“The Picts were known as the ‘Painted People’ by the Romans who regularly attempted to conquer them and the symbols they painted on their faces were highly significant,” continued Cara. “Our Picts won’t be using blue woad as it’s not very easy to remove but, other than that, the symbols will be very similar to those that adorned the Picts almost two thousand years ago.”
Pictavia’s Pict for a Day event runs from 2pm until 4pm on Saturday, July 9. Normal admission fees apply, no booking necessary. For more information, call 01356 626241 or visit www.pictavia.org.uk.
