Genealogist Alan Stewart has some exciting news for those with English and Welsh ancestry on his blog. You know the way that all confirmed testamentary records for Scotland are available at the ScotlandsPeople site? Well the English don't have anything like it, as with so many sources for wills available pre-1858 down south, there is no single place to look for them. Unlike Scotland, with its civil confirmation process from the 16th century, the English system prior to 1858 involved Anglican church courts at various tiers, and it can sometimes be a nightmare to work out where to look for a will if you don't know where probate was granted.
Origins Network is hoping to change that however, with a new project involving the British Records Society, FamilySearch and practically everyone else from God to my granny!
