The London based Society of Genealogists (www.societyofgenealogists.com) has announced that some more of its online collections are now available on FindmyPast (www.findmypast.co.uk). The collections are all English based, though you may find your Scottish ancestor amongst them.
In due course one collection to be added "in the coming weeks" which may be of particular interest north of the border is the Apprentices of Great Britain collection, currently accessible on British Origins, which provides an index to taxes paid by masters taking on apprentices from 1710-1774 - about a fifth of the 350,000 entries relate to Scots. (The collection comes from TNA's IR1 series, though the full series has records going to 1811). Additional records concerning lists of apprentices and masters from Scotland can also be found on The Original Record site at www.theoriginalrecord.com, though this is a much more tricky site to negotiate, with an interesting payment and navigation structure!
The SoG records just added to FindmyPast are:
•Boyd’s Marriage Index containing over 7 million names from 1538 to 1840
•Boyd’s London Burials 1538-1872 containing 240,000 names
•Faculty Office Marriage Licence Allegations 1701-1850
•St Andrew’s Holborn Marriage Index 1754-1812
•Vicar-General Marriage Licences Allegations 1694-1850
•St Leonard Shoreditch Burials 1805-1858 and Workhouse Deaths 1820-1828, online for the first time
•Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills Index 1750-1800
As well as the apprenticeship records, future additions will also include Bank of England Wills Extracts containing 60,500 names, and with images.
