COMMUNITIES ENCOURAGED TO RECOGNISE ‘HISTORIC’ ACHIEVEMENTS OF YOUNG PEOPLE

Communities throughout Scotland are being encouraged to recognise the achievements of young people to care for and protect Scotland’s heritage.

Historic Scotland is asking communities to nominate young people who have worked passionately to support and promote their heritage as part of this year’s Young Scot Awards.

Now in its fifth year, the awards are designed to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of Scotland’s young people. Covering a wide range of categories, from the environment to democracy, through to arts and sport, the awards recognise young people who have made a real difference, and are an inspiration to Scotland and its people.

Last year, Jason Douglas, 18 of Blairgowrie won the heritage award after volunteering his time to record the oral history of members of the Black Watch who had fought in conflicts ranging from WWII to the Falklands, Bosnia and Iraq. This included interviewing 30 veterans, and generating over 60 hours of video. Jason’s contribution is now part of an online resource for schools as part of the ‘Their Past Your Future Initiative’, a UK-wide campaign exploring the impact and ongoing legacy of 20th century conflict on people in the UK.

Ruth Parsons, Chief Executive, Historic Scotland said;

“It is fantastic to see so many young people with a passion for their heritage. Scotland’s rich heritage is a key part of our culture, telling the story of who we are as individuals, communities and as a nation. Our heritage is also celebrated throughout the world, bringing many visitors to Scotland who are keen to share and learn more about our fascinating past.

“We are delighted to sponsor the category for the fifth year and look forward to reading the entries which are always hugely inspirational.”

The nomination process is simple. Visit www.youngscotawards.co.uk and explain in no more than 500 words why you wish to nominate an individual by 18th February. The three shortlisted finalists in the category will attend a glittering awards ceremony in Glasgow on the 29th April where the winner will be announced.
