The Decade of Centenaries: Researching Ireland 1912-1923 talk

I gave a talk last night to the Guild of One-Name Studies (https://one-name.org) on the topic of The Decade of Centenaries: Researching Ireland 1912-1923. The session looked at the tumultuos period in which Ireland's constitutional argument with the UK ended up with the partition of the island and a full blown civil war, but in which other struggles were also happening, including that of the Suffragettes, the rights of workers to unionise, and of course, the First World War.

The session was recorded by the society and is freely available online at https://one-name.org/the-decade-of-centenaries-researching-ireland-1912-1923-webinar-with-chris-paton/ until May 8th (or click on the image below to be taken directly there).

If you want to know more about the period, there is a dedicated chapter on the topic in my book Tracing Your Irish Family History on the Internet (2nd edition), available from Pen and Sword at https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Tracing-Your-Irish-Family-History-on-the-Internet-Paperback/p/16483 (if seeking to buy it from Ireland, postage is cheaper if bought from Books Ireland at https://www.booksireland.org.uk/store/books/tracing-your-irish-family-history-on-the-internet-second-edition)

Guild of One-Name Studies finding the diaspora in newspapers webinar

I have been asked to give the following a plug by the Guild of One-Name Studies (https://one-name.org) - no probs!

DISCOVER DETAILS OF YOUR ANCESTORS AS THEY MOVED ACROSS THE WORLD
News from Home:  finding the diaspora in newspapers

Keeping in touch with family and friends if you moved to a foreign posting or emigrated was not at the touch of a button as it is now, so our ancestors used the newspapers to let people know what was happening in their lives. They used the births, marriages and deaths notices, and their movements abroad can be traced through shipping lists and announcements of promotions in both the army and civil service.  Newspapers can also reveal what made them leave home and how they adapted to life in a new land.

Join Aoife O'Connor from Findmypast as she explores what you can find out about your ancestors who worked abroad or emigrated to a new land.

The second seminar in our 'Ancestors in Print' series takes place at 8pm (UK time) on Wednesday 3 February. Register now to watch the free seminar or the recording, which will be available to non-members for a couple of weeks. Click on this link to register:

Free Y-DNA testing for men carrying the MacDougall surname

From Alistair MacDonald, one of the administrators on a DNA project which might be of interest to some:

Free Y-DNA testing for any men who carry the MacDougall surname or variant spelling.

The MacDougall DNA Project was started in 2008 and is hosted at Family Tree DNA. The project is endeavouring to recruit test takers to help with the projects aims and objectives.

The project is ofering a free 37 Y-DNA marker test to men who carry the MacDougall surname or variant spelling. The test analyses the male Y-chromosome therefore only men can take the test.

The project aims to strengthen Clan MacDougall bonds and fellowship through the following objectives:

(a) Identify the Y-chromosome signature (the paternal tree) of different MacDougall lineages.

(b) Through (a), help test-takers to establish the likeliest location where their earliest MacDougall ancestors would have lived.

(c) Through (a), help test-takers to establish how they are connected to other test takers and to the Clan as a whole, using both genealogical and DNA evidence.

The MacDougall DNA Research Project is an independent study and is not affiliated with any organization. Please visit our website to learn more and apply for a free test. https://macdougalldna.org/
