Canada's first prime minister, John A. MacDonald, is believed by many to have been born in 1820 at Glasgow's Brunswick Lane, a small street off Argyll Street in the city centre. If you had a look at the street today, you might not believe it. The abandoned buildings still standing there were most recently used as a pub and a brothel, and nothing stands there to commemorate the city's link to one of Canada's most famous adoptive sons.
Matthew Hart has written an article in the Toronto Star concerning plans by the current owners, Selfridges (ironically owned by a Canadian), to demolish the last standing buildings on the street. In the piece he reveals the ongoing efforts to raise a commemorative monument in MacDonald's name.
