I have recived some more information on the proposed online Master's course in Highlands and Islands History from the UHI (see UHI Masters Degree in Highlands and Islands history).
The degree is due to launch in 2011-12, and is expected to make full use of not only written, but also audio and visual sources, for the purposes of teaching and learning on the programme. The aim is to have in place two core, 15-credit modules or short courses, which will provide a firm foundation as regards what's needed to research and write a Master's dissertation. These will cover, in addition, a diverse range of traditional and non-traditional primary sources and academic approaches relating to the contested history of this region, from medieval times through to the modern. On top of that, a variety of online optional modules will be available, on themes including the following:
The Lordship of the Isles
Contemplating the Clearances
The Highlands at War, 1914-45
Famine in the Highlands and Islands
The History of Gaelic Education in the Twentieth Century
Gender and the Family in the Highlands and Islands
Representing the Highlands
Further details will be added in due course on the UHI website as the programme develops, and an additional and more informal way of keeping in touch with the Centre for History's developments is its Facebook Group at www.facebook.com - type in 'Centre for History' to find them.
I'm sorely tempted...!
