A parish school at Durness had no pupils in it for 19 years in the late 19th C, but retained its headmaster for the duration, he having refused to leave until a change in the law led to his being sacked. A good and classic case of Scottish "oh ye bloody think so?"-ness...!
The school is currently being excavated by Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD), and local community company Durness Development Group has been involved in researching its history.
