Pharos - Scottish Research Online course

Just another quick heads up for the Scottish Research Online course which I will be teaching from August 24th for five weeks, through the Pharos Teaching and Tutoring Ltd site at www.pharostutors.com.

The course description is as follows:

Scotland was first to have major records digitized and offer indexes and images online. It has also been a leader in placing resource information on the World Wide Web. This course describes the major sites, the types of information and data that they offer, the forms in which databases are presented and how to analyze results. You will learn to lay the foundations for searching a family, how to select best resources and what to do next either online or in libraries and archives.

Instructor: Chris Paton

•Scotlands People, Family Search, Ancestry, FreeCen: content, comparison, assessment
•Essential Maps and Gazetteers

Note: it is recommended but not required that students in this course sign up for the basic search option, 30 units/seven days, at ScotlandsPeople (cost is six pounds)

Each lesson includes exercises and activities, and a minimum of 1 one-hour chat through a dedicated chat room on the site.

How the courses work

The course will in essence show you not only how to use the websites to their best advantage, but crucially, it will also show you the optimum research strategies that can be employed when using these sites. There will also be a dedicated discussion forum for the course throughout where we can examine issues raised throughout and try to perhaps crack a problem nut or two!

Other forthcoming Pharos courses for July and August include:

Old Handwriting for Family Historians, 27 JULY 09
Your Family in England 1714 to 1830, 3 SEP 09
