The Mormons (i.e. the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) are currently engaged in a massive project to digitise billions of records held in their Granite Mountain vault in Utah, USA, which are finding their way online through the Record Search Pilot on their FamilySearch website (www.familysearch.org).
The following article provides a flavour of the project: www.meridianmagazine.com/churchupdate/100430digitize.html
At Who Do You Think You Are? Live earlier this year I asked about Scottish records making their way online through this project, but the response I got was that there are permission issues which will make this unlikely, at least for the foreseeable future. If you have English connections though, there is already an increasing amount of material making its way online, and of course, the Irish civil registration indexes are there also. Amazing project...!
