Aberdeenshire local studies podcasts

Aberdeenshire's local studies department in Old Meldrum has been promoting its library and resources this past month - you can see more on the department's offerings at https://www.livelifeaberdeenshire.org.uk/libraries/local-heritage/.

One thing I hadn't twigged was that they also have a series of podcasts available freely online at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLf9SJJOIgiNJZc0WdEanO6AzUk-DC8OPc. Topics include:

  • Lord Pitsligo, Jacobite leader and fugitive hiding in plain site
  • Forvie, the village consumed by sand
  • Donald Dinnie, Victorian Scotland's greatest athlete

And many more, including one on the local studies team itself, and its work.

Enjoy!

Ancestry adds Aberdeenshire poor law records 1818-1923

A new Aberdeenshire collection has been recently added to Ancestry (www.ancestry.co.uk):

Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Poor Law Applications and Registers, 1818-1923
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/62686/
Source: Poor Law Applications, 1834-1943 and Poor Law Relief General Registers, 1812-1959. Aberdeenshire, Scotland: Aberdeen City Council.

About the Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Poor Law Applications and Registers, 1818-1923

This collection contains records relating to the relief of people living in poverty in the historic counties of Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, and Kincardineshire, Scotland. Most of the documents were created by the parochial boards and parish councils that were responsible for providing relief to impoverished people in their parish. Before 1921, only persons with disabilities and people of old age were entitled to relief.

The records precede 1929 when the responsibility to administer "poor relief" became a government function.

Records in this collection may include the following information:

  • Name
  • Birthplace
  • Date of birth
  • Names of parents or other relatives
  • Occupation
  • Marital status
  • Place of death
  • Date of death

Records may show the basis of the disability, which could include children, or pregnancy in cases where widows claimed relief.

Source: Aberdeenshire School Admission Records. Aberdeen, Scotland: Aberdeen City Council.

This collection contains images of school admission registers produced in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, between 1856 and 1928. The index provides the page number where each student can be found in the register. For schools closed before 1975, the collection is divided into geographic groups. There are records from regular and special schools in the city of Aberdeen, and records for schools in Aberdeen County. The registers don't have pictures of the students or the names of schools where the students attended.

Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives will be vacating its building at Dunbar Street in early 2025.
To prepare, pack and move the archive collections it is necessary for our opening hours to reduce from April 2024, as follows:

1 April - 3 June:
Old Aberdeen House open Mondays (by appointment only) 09:30 to 16:30.
Town House open Fridays (by appointment only) 09:30 to 16:30

10 June onwards:
Both Old Aberdeen House and Town House will be closed.

The Town House search room is scheduled to reopen in Spring 2025 (with access to collections formerly at Old Aberdeen House at this site by prior arrangement).

Our research service has also been temporarily suspended and, whilst e-mail enquiries remain open at archives@aberdeencity.gov.uk, we may not be able to answer all queries whilst access to our collections is limited.

We look forward to updating you with our plans in the future.

Scottish and Irish directories included in new TheGenealogist release

From TheGenealogist (www.thegenealogist.co.uk):

Look up your ancestors in these newly released Historical Directories

Over 5 million individuals have been added to TheGenealogist’s Residential and Trade Directories Collection, helping you discover your ancestors, their addresses, and their occupations back to 1744.

The new records cover England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Channel Islands, along with some from as far afield as America, Canada, India, New Zealand and South Africa, thus adding an international flavour to this release.

Dating from 1744 to 1899, the directories in this addition to TheGenealogist are a useful finding aid for ancestors' names, addresses, and occupations and can offer contemporary details of where your past family had lived.

If a forebear had a business, then the commercial listings in the directory could help find where an ancestor may have worked.

Early Directories can also be useful for finding the addresses of residents before the census, reveal the railways that may have served the area and to find other communications links to nearby towns. With this information, those who may have ‘lost’ an ancestor may make an educated guess of where a person may have moved to live in the past.

These directory publications can also be a great complement to a census record, as the topographical information can flesh out an ancestor’s area for the researcher.

In the case of a head of the household, we may be able to find an address different from that recorded in other records such as the decennial census. This may help fill in the gaps of where a stray ancestor moved to between the census counts.

Complete Access for Under £10 a Month!

To celebrate this latest release, TheGenealogist is offering its four-month Diamond package for just £39.95 – that’s less than £10 a month! To find out more and claim the offer, visit: https://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/MGBDIR124

This offer expires at the end of 9th February 2024.

ANESFHS changes Saturday research centre service to appointments only

Aberdeen and North-East Scotland Family History Society (www.anesfhs.org.uk) has switched its Saturday Research Centre service to appointments only:

Research Centre - Saturday Opening by Appointment

Our Family History Centre at King Street has seen a steep fall-off in visitor numbers on Saturday mornings. In the current climate of high energy prices and the increased cost of living, the Society can no longer justify the costs of opening the Centre or expect the duty volunteers to travel in when there are no visitors for us to welcome.

Until further notice, our Centre will be open on Saturday mornings by appointment only. If you would like to visit on a Saturday, please telephone to make a booking. We will keep these arrangements under review and will announce any changes. The Centre is open for business as usual from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.

For more on the Research Centre visit https://www.anesfhs.org.uk/about-us/research-centre

TheGenealogist releases University, College and School Registers

From TheGenealogist (www.thegenealogist.co.uk):

University, College and School Registers released online by TheGenealogist

TheGenealogist releases more College and University registers into its expanding Educational Records adding a quarter of a million additional individuals. This release includes records from England, Scotland, Ireland, The Netherlands, New Zealand and even a college from Portugal.

The records can be used to discover a student’s achievements and are fantastic for identifying where next to apply your research for an ancestor. Educational records will confirm birth dates and sometimes the place of birth. Usually they give a father’s name and address, which is useful when the parent is missing from the census, and they can give details of the student’s occupation and a great deal more useful information.

Researchers can use this new data to find ancestors who attended or taught at a variety of Educational establishments in a wide range of years up to the mid 1930s. The earliest record in this release is dated 1566 in the Christ's Hospital Exhibitioners to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, 1566-1923. In contrast the latest record is 1936, taken from the List of Occupants of Rooms in St John's College 1895-1936.

These records can also be used to identify those who held high office in the institutions, so that University patrons, deans, visitors, professors and masters and the principals and governors of schools are usually included.

Also in this release we have some fascinating Irish Examination Board records from 1889, 1891 and 1892. These reveal the candidates’ names, addresses and grades in all their subjects, including some rather unusual ones. If you can find an ancestor, within these records, it will certainly be an eyeopener as they disclose what subjects your forebear had been a good or a bad student of.
