British Newspaper Archive to unveil new look platform this summer

The British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) has some news:

Something very exciting is coming... the next chapter of the British Newspaper Archive. Later this summer, a new BNA platform will arrive, featuring a range of improvements. The move will be a seamless one, and all your trusted tools will remain. Discover more here: https://bit.ly/4esZXrQ

The full article essentially outlines that the BNA is moving to a new platform in the summer, and promises that it will all be the land of milk and honey when it does so.

I sincerely hope so, and that this isn't going to be a roll out of the FindmyPast version of the platform, which, despite recent improvements, is still inferior to the BNA's own platform.

We'll know soon enough.

Will the British Newspaper Archive reach 100 million pages of content by the end of this year?

I mentioned last week that the British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) was fast approaching 98 million pages of content, and noting the additions for Scotland and Ireland over the previous thorty days - see https://scottishgenes.blogspot.com/2025/11/british-newspaper-archive-approaches-98.html.

The BNA has passed that mark now, with  98,175,654 pages at the time of writing, and with some additional Irish content added over the last week:

Ulster Gazette
1878

Connaught Telegraph
1876-1913

Athlone Times
1889-1902

With the speed at which content is now being added, I'm wondering if the BNA can make 100 million pages of content available by January 1st 2026?! Bear in mind that it took nine years to achieve 40 million pages, a goal reached in late 2020 after nine years (https://scottishgenes.blogspot.com/2020/11/british-newspaper-archive-reaches-40.html) - just five years later, it has added almost 60 million more pages of content.

Watch this space!

Extension of British Newspaper Archive project

FindmyPast (www.findmypast.co.uk) and the British Library (www.bl.uk) have extended their newspaper digitisation collaboration, with more promised content for the British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.com).

The project, which has already passed 90 million pages of digitised content, will deliver another 70 million pages over the next five years. When the partnership was initially created in 2011, the goal was to create forty million pages over ten years, so this will see the initial aspirations more than quadrupled (you can read about the initial launch of the project at https://britishgenes.blogspot.com/2011/11/british-newspaper-archive-beta-initial.html).

For further details visit https://www.family-tree.co.uk/news/renewed-british-library-findmypast-partnership-70-million-further/.

Carrick Times joins the British Newspaper Archive

Well now I feel old - I've just found a mention of myself on the British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) in the Carrick Times and East Antrim Times, from a school prize-giving event in Carrickfergus in 1989!

The newspaper has been added from 1987-1999, and I have been merrily plugging away at it for the last hour, finding all sorts of information about my family, including several photos of my father (pictured below, right), sister and aunt. I actually moved to England in 1991, and so it's great to see reportage of various things my father was involved in both politically and through work for the period after I left.

Thanks you BNA - and any chance of pre-1987 editions going online at any stage?

Scottish Cinema title added to FindmyPast newspapers and the BNA

FindmyPast (www.findmypast.co.uk) has added a new title to the British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) and its own site's newspaper collection:

Film lovers will be excited to learn that this week's new addition is a cinema-themed publication entitled Scottish Cinema. This trade publication was first circulated in September 1919 and met the desire for Scotland to have its very own journal devoted to the cinema trade.

Coverage is from 1919-1920. You can read more about it at https://www.findmypast.co.uk/blog/new/oxfordshire-parish-scottish-cinema

New newspaper viewer coming soon to FindmyPast

Last night I had the pleasure to host a talk by Mary McKee from FindmyPast, as part of Family Tree magazine's webinars series (https://www.family-tree.co.uk/how-to-guides/webinars/). The talk was about various tips and tricks to get the best from the site for family history research.

The most interesting revelation, and the one for which most questions were asked, was FindmyPast's newspapers section, which Mary demonstrated. By way of background, FindmyPast has a long running arrangement with the British Library to digitise its newspaper content for the British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk), with the same content being added to a FindmyPast premium subscription. Until now it has always been far better to carry out searches on the BNA site, which has a far superior search system, and if successful in a search, to then look for the actual image on the FMP site, if you have a subscription there, rather than having to have two subscriptions. Searches on the BNA are free, you only need a subscription to see the images on that site (although there is a small part of the collection that is available to view for free).

The new FindmyPast viewer should be launched in the next few weeks, and does have many serious improvements. You will be able to view double page spreads, view a thumbnail strip at the bottom of the viewer to go to other pages in the edition being viewed. There will also be a handy cropping tool, to snip articles from pages, and you will be able to switch on and off the highlighted words in the viewer (from the search terms used).

When the new front page for the newspaper search section was launched on FindmyPast I was really unimpressed, it was way to simplistic for my taste, with two simple fields, for names and keywords. However, Mary did state that once into the main search area there are many filters that can be selected, e.g. to select a specific title, and a few tips and tricks there to concentrate searches. These include using a - sign before a word to remove to matches containing that word, a ~ sign to look for words within a range in text (e.g. adding ~5 after a search with more than one word so that it will only return instances of those words appearing within 5 words of each other), and the use of * as a wildcard.

Mary suggested a useful blog post to visit on the topic is https://www.findmypast.co.uk/blog/help/newspaper-search-tips, with some excellent tips included.

I asked Mary whether even with the new additions, it would be better to stick with the BNA or FMP for more specific research? At the moment, it is recognised that the BNA search facility is the gold standard, but the new enehancements are now making the FMP version a much better prospect. A new 'advanced search' is also currently being developed. As such, it may not be too long before the pain of having to decide on either a BNA or a FMP subscription for newspaper research is finally removed.

I look forward to seeing the new viewer released and to road-testing it soon!

(With thanks to Mary McKee and Family Tree)

British Newspaper Archive passes 67 million pages - but minimal updates for Scotland and Ireland

The British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) has now passed 67 million pages of content, with  67,079,676 pages available to search at the time of writing.

However, of the 155 titles added or updated in the last 30 days, the additions for Scotland and Ireland have been, well, how shall we say it... minimal?

1996, 1998-1999

Ayrshire World

Clyde Weekly News
1999

Galloway News and Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser

Ireland

Louth Standard

With Scotland, there seems to be a policy now of just adding scraps from the 1990s each week, from local titles (and to be fair, that applies to some of the English content also). While all additions can be useful, I did query this with the BNA last week, asking when we will see some more deeply historic content again. I have been told more is on its way, but I have to admit, it did feel like a bot provided the answer.

Fingers crossed that Scotland will become relevant again soon!
