Free access to American military records on MyHeritage

If you have Americans in your family, this may be of interest from MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com):

This Memorial Day, MyHeritage is opening free access to all 213 million U.S. military historical records from May 22–26, 2026. As the United States celebrates its 250th year, it’s a meaningful time to explore the stories, service, and sacrifices of the ancestors who helped shape the nation across generations of military history.

The free access includes 286 collections spanning early American conflicts through modern wars, including major additions from the past year such as World War II enlistment and draft registration records and navy muster rolls.

Access the records via https://www.myheritage.com/research/records-catalog/usa/military/catid-3000

MyHeritage offers new Family Infographics tool

MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com) has introduced a new tool that allows you to create infographics about individuals within your family tree, which may be of some interest to readers. The tool, called Family Infographics, is located under the Family Tree menu option at the top of the page.

I've had a quick go, and have to admit that the result looks very much like an AI driven project in its infancy, as the image I uploaded bears little resemblance to the graphic displayed. I actually created two different infographics about my great grandfather, and the image is wildly different between each, despite being drawn from the same source photo, as can be seen.

Nevertheless, the potential is there, and in time it can only be hoped that the image realisation improves, without the hallucinations that often accompany AI software!

MyHeritage's ScribeAI tool

From MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com):

We’re excited to introduce Scribe AI, a powerful new feature that transcribes, translates, and interprets historical documents and photos. Released just a few weeks ago, the first users who tried it have already given it rave reviews and told us about breakthroughs they were able to make with it.

Upload a scanned family letter or historical document, or a photo, and Scribe AI will generate a clear transcription, explain symbols and context, and suggest next steps for your research. For photos, it will estimate the place and date and provide a full historical context. It can also be applied directly to historical records on MyHeritage that include images, and to photos you’ve already uploaded to MyHeritage.

Powered by advanced AI technology trained on historical records and photos, it reveals insights you may never have uncovered otherwise.

You can find out more about this new tool at https://blog.myheritage.com/2026/03/introducing-scribe-ai/.

Comment: I am personally allergic to anything that has AI in its title, but let me know what you think of it!

MyHeritage launches new Scribe AI tool

With the arrival of Rootstech in the US, MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com) has announced the launch of a new AI based tool on its website called ScribeAI:

Introducing Scribe AI: Transcribe, Interpret, and Receive Fascinating Insights About Your Family’s Historical Documents and Photos, and MyHeritage Records

We’re excited to introduce Scribe AI, a powerful new feature on MyHeritage that transcribes, translates, and interprets historical family documents and photos. Simply upload an image file of a scanned handwritten letter, an old photograph, a gravestone, or a coat of arms, and Scribe AI will generate a clear transcription, translate it into your language if necessary, explain symbols and context, and suggest next steps for your research.

Caution is advised! This feature is highly addictive and genealogists we’ve given early access to this feature have become hooked, and can’t stop uploading more and more items for analysis! It would be fair to say that Scribe AI is one of the most important genealogical features we’ve added to MyHeritage in the past few years.

Watch the video below to see what Scribe AI can reveal:

(Also available at https://youtu.be/zbbyRnBSPz8?si=5QkdRIdwMwM0i8_C)

If you’ve ever struggled to read an old family document, you’re not alone. Perhaps you’ve found yourself squinting at faded handwriting, trying to decipher unfamiliar script, or puzzling over a record written in a language you don’t speak. Maybe you’ve shared an image in a genealogy Facebook group or sent it around in a family chat asking, “Can anyone read this?”

Old family documents and photos often contain valuable information, but extracting that information can be frustrating and time-consuming. Scribe AI removes these barriers and does the work for you. Instead of guessing, crowdsourcing, or hiring an expert, you can get detailed answers quickly.

Scribe AI is currently available on the MyHeritage website and can be accessed through the browser on your computer or mobile device. Support for the MyHeritage mobile app will be added soon.

MyHeritage adds incoming and outgoing UK passenger lists

MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com) has added the surviving incoming and outgoing UK Board of Trade registered passenger lists from the late 19th to mid-twentieth centuries, which may be of interest if your Scottish and Irish ancestors emigrated or returned back to the UK or Ireland in this period.

From MyHeritage:

United Kingdom and Ireland, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878–1960

This collection includes 15.7 million records of passengers arriving in the United Kingdom (and Ireland until independence in 1922) from ports around the world between 1878 and 1960. Each record documents an individual’s arrival into the country and typically includes the passenger’s full name, date of birth, current residence, intended residence, date and place of arrival, place of departure, and the name of the ship.

While the collection begins in 1878, many of the earliest records from 1878 to 1888 were destroyed by the Board of Trade in 1900. The surviving records from this early period are especially rare and valuable.

In addition to immigrants and returning residents, the collection also captures short-term visitors and transit passengers. Because ships were required to submit passenger lists at every U.K. stop, even those not intending to stay often appear in the records.

This collection is particularly useful for locating individuals who may not appear in other sources — such as those who fell between census years, left home temporarily, or migrated in stages. Whether your ancestors were arriving for work, travel, or to begin a new life, these records provide valuable insights into their movements and circumstances.

Search the incoming passenger lists at https://www.myheritage.com/research/collection-20991/united-kingdom-ireland-incoming-passenger-lists-1878-1960

United Kingdom and Ireland, Outgoing Passenger Lists, 1890–1960

This collection contains 23.5 million records of individuals departing from ports in the United Kingdom (and Ireland until independence in 1922) between 1890 and 1960. Records typically include the passenger’s name, date of birth, current and intended residence, date and place of departure, place of arrival, and the name of the ship.

These lists are a vital resource for understanding emigration patterns from the U.K. and Ireland, particularly to destinations such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and South Africa. For many families with ancestors who left the British Isles in the late 19th or early 20th century, these records may contain the only surviving documentation of their departure. These passengers include many continental Europeans, especially Scandinavians, who commonly passed through the U.K. en route to destinations like the United States and Canada.

Together, the incoming and outgoing collections represent the entire surviving set of U.K. and Ireland passenger lists for this time period, offering a comprehensive view of travel into and out of the country across 8 decades. They provide detailed, global context for millions of family journeys.

Searc the outgoing passenger lists at https://www.myheritage.com/research/collection-20989/united-kingdom-ireland-outgoing-passenger-lists-1890-1960

The company has also added some nonconformist English and Welsh parish records - for details of the full release visit https://blog.myheritage.com/2026/01/now-live-4-major-u-k-and-ireland-collections-passenger-lists-and-nonconformist-vital-records/.

MyHeritage is now searchable in Irish (and Welsh)

MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com) has added nine new languages to its website, including the Irish language and Welsh, bringing the total number of languages to fifty that users can now employ to search records on the platform. I think this is the first time that any of the major commercial genealogy websites has offered a facility for records to be searched in an Insular Celtic language.

It should be noted that many state based genealogy websites created in the Irish republic can also be searched in Irish (Gaeilge), for example IrishGenealogy.ie, with its gaelic version accessible via at https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/ga/ - simply toggle between the words English and Gaeilge located at the top right of the screen.

Note that the Irish census website at https://nationalarchives.ie/collections/search-the-census/ shows a toggle option between the two languages, but in fact only has an English version available at present, with a small message written as Gaeilge at the top:

Cuirfear aistriúchán ar fáil go luath

Ár leithscéal as an míchaoithiúlacht. Cuirfear aistriúchán Gaeilge ar an leathanach seo ar fáil go luath. Go raibh maith agat as do chuid foighneachta agus muid ag obair ar leagan uasdátaithe.

Translated as:

Translation coming soon

We apologize for the inconvenience. An Irish translation of this page will be available soon. Thank you for your patience while we work on an updated version.

For more on the MyHeritage story, visit its dedicated blog post at https://blog.myheritage.com/2026/01/myheritage-expands-to-50-languages/.

I look forward to hopefully seeing Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) added st some point in the near future! (Hint!)

MyHeritage Upgrades Its Consumer DNA Tests to Whole Genome Sequencing

From MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com), news of a big leap forward with its autosomal DNA testing:

MyHeritage Upgrades Its Consumer DNA Tests to Whole Genome Sequencing

TEL AVIV, Israel & LEHI, Utah & HOUSTON & FREMONT, California October 14 , 2025 — MyHeritage, the leading global platform for family history and DNA testing, announced today a landmark move to Whole Genome Sequencing for its at-home DNA test, MyHeritage DNA (www.myheritage.com/dna). Leveraging cutting-edge sequencing technology from Ultima Genomics and processing at the Gene by Gene lab, MyHeritage is the first major consumer DNA testing company to adopt Whole Genome Sequencing at a scale of more than one million tests per year. The enriched data will empower MyHeritage to deliver more accurate ethnicity analysis and DNA matching, and unlock opportunities for future innovation in consumer genomics and genetic genealogy.

Whole Genome Sequencing reads almost the entire human genetic code, covering around 3 billion base pairs (nucleotides). This is superior to the standard genotyping arrays used by most consumer DNA tests, including MyHeritage until recently, which read only about 700,000 base pairs. More data enables deeper insights across all types of genetic analysis. Whole Genome Sequencing is now being applied to most new MyHeritage DNA kits currently being processed at the lab, and to every new MyHeritage DNA kit sold moving forward. MyHeritage DNA kits already processed with the older genotyping array technology will not be reprocessed with Whole Genome Sequencing. Customers whose MyHeritage DNA kits are processed with Whole Genome Sequencing will be able to download their entire genome from MyHeritage at no cost, in CRAM format. They may also unlock additional insights by uploading their data to other trusted genetic service providers that support such uploads.

Due to its high technological potential, MyHeritage has been eying Whole Genome Sequencing for years. A pioneering study by the MyHeritage Science Team published in 2020 validated Whole Genome Sequencing for reliable relative matching at scale. Following that study, MyHeritage has been collaborating closely with Ultima Genomics since its emergence from stealth mode in mid-2022, and later jointly with Gene by Gene, to prepare the scientific and logistical foundation for upgrading the MyHeritage DNA processing pipeline to Whole Genome Sequencing using Ultima’s technology. The upgrade was completed successfully and creates new opportunities for MyHeritage to deliver deeper insights into ethnic origins, family connections, and genetic genealogy, without any price increase to consumers. Even before this upgrade, MyHeritage was consistently the most affordable DNA test on the market among the major DNA testing companies. The upgrade to Whole Genome Sequencing makes the MyHeritage offering even more compelling.

“This is a pivotal moment for genetic genealogy,” said Gilad Japhet, Founder and CEO of MyHeritage. “We are proud to take this pioneering step into Whole Genome Sequencing together with Ultima Genomics and with our longstanding partners at Gene by Gene. MyHeritage customers will enjoy the fruits of this technological upgrade for years to come, through increased accuracy, deeper insights, and exciting new products.”

“MyHeritage’s move to Whole Genome Sequencing marks a major milestone for consumer DNA testing,” said Dr. Gilad Almogy, Founder and CEO of Ultima Genomics. “It demonstrates the scalability and maturity of Ultima’s innovative technology and accelerates the immense value that Whole Genome Sequencing can bring to consumers. It has been a pleasure collaborating with MyHeritage over the past few years, and we are proud to work together with them and Gene by Gene to bring genetic genealogy to new heights for millions of consumers worldwide.”

“The transition to Whole Genome Sequencing represents the most ambitious project in our years-long partnership with MyHeritage,” said Dr. Lior Rauchberger, CEO of Gene by Gene. “We are proud to help set a new standard in consumer genomics and support the growth of what will soon become the world’s largest database of whole genomes. The rollout is centered at Gene by Gene’s state-of-the-art laboratory in Houston, Texas, which will house a large fleet of Ultima UG100™ sequencing instruments.”

FamilyTreeDNA partnership with MyHeritage

Apologies, I've been a bit tardy with this one! From Daniel Horowitz at MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com), concerning a new collaboration between MyHeritage and Family TreeDNA (www.familytreedna.com):

I’m delighted to announce the launch of a new collaboration between the two companies. This collaboration, which includes integration between the MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA websites, enables FamilyTreeDNA customers to transfer their family trees to MyHeritage, and to continue building them on MyHeritage. FamilyTreeDNA users can now easily transfer their family trees to MyHeritage for free, after providing consent on both FamilyTreeDNA and MyHeritage.

This collaboration expands the two companies’ longstanding partnership, and will provide FamilyTreeDNA customers with access to MyHeritage’s robust suite of genealogy tools and features, many of which are not available on FamilyTreeDNA.

This strategic decision allows FamilyTreeDNA to focus on its expertise in DNA testing services and reporting, while providing its users with access to the powerful family tree tools and technologies offered by MyHeritage.

To facilitate this collaboration, MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA have developed a technical integration that now enables FamilyTreeDNA users to seamlessly transfer their family tree data to MyHeritage. This process is voluntary; however, transferring the tree data to MyHeritage is encouraged, as FamilyTreeDNA will officially sunset their family tree builder on September 9, 2024. At that point, all family trees on FamilyTreeDNA will become read-only. It will still be possible to transfer trees from FamilyTreeDNA to MyHeritage after this date, but this functionality may not be available forever, so the sooner the transfer is done, the better. Access to DNA results on FamilyTreeDNA will remain unchanged.

There’s nothing like indulging that sweet sense of nostalgia when you look at old photos. We’re delighted to announce that we’ve made it even easier to scan family photos using the MyHeritage mobile app. We recently added a powerful, state-of-the art Photo Scanner that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to capture entire album pages in one tap. The new Photo Scanner uses the same technology that we use in Reimagine, our standalone app for preserving and improving your family photos that we released last year. Users were excited to efficiently scan their cherished photos and have them sync with their MyHeritage family site. We’re excited to bring the same powerful technology to the MyHeritage mobile app, so you can preserve your family photos and improve them with our suite of photo features!

Scottish Monumental Inscriptions records removed from DeceasedOnline

I have been advised by Helen Grant, owner of Scottish Monumental Inscriptions (https://www.scottish-monumental-inscriptions.com), that some 436177 of her inscription records have been removed from the DeceasedOnline platform (https://www.deceasedonline.com) as of this morning.

The records, created by Helen and her team over many years, can still be accessed via the Scottish Monumental Inscriptions platform itself, as well as through the following platforms:

Ancestry - Scotland, Burial Monument Inscriptions, 1507-2019
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/62497/

MyHeritage - Scotland Gravestones and Memorials

FindmyPast - Scotland Monumental Inscriptions

Other Scottish records remain on DeceasedOnline, including records from Aberdeen and Moray.

MyHeritage grants free access to Irish records this weekend

MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com) has made its Irish collections free to access for St. Patrick's Day:

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we’re happy to announce that we’re making all 14 million Irish historical records available for free from March 14 to 18, 2024!

Search all Irish records for free

Whether you’re decked out in green, savoring a traditional Irish dish, or just immersed in the vibrant culture and storied past of Ireland, this is a perfect opportunity to explore your Irish roots. Millions worldwide claim Irish roots, showing how far and wide the Irish diaspora stretches. Perhaps you will discover stories of endurance, migration, or interesting new details about the daily lives of your Irish ancestors.

Among our treasure trove of records, some of the most valuable Irish historical collections include:

  • 1901 Ireland Census: A snapshot of life at the turn of the century, providing invaluable information on household members, occupations, and living conditions. The 1901 census is the earliest complete Irish census still in existence; most of the previous censuses were destroyed.
  • 1911 Ireland Census: Offering a detailed view of Irish society ten years later, allowing comparisons and insights into changes over time.
  • Ireland Marriages, 1619-1898: A compilation of Irish marriage records, essential for tracing lineage and family connections.

These collections, as well as many others, can help to paint a picture of your ancestors’ lives, their communities, and the historical context of their lives. Whether you’re an experienced genealogist or just starting to scratch the surface of your family history, this free access period is an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into your Irish roots.

Search through our Irish records today and discover the stories of your ancestors this St. Patrick’s Day.
