Ancestry releases first batch of Second World War army service records

Ancestry (www.ancestry.co.uk) has released the first batch of infantry records from the Second World War (and beyond):

UK, Military Service Records, 1939-1959
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/62685/
Source: WO 422: War Office: Infantry Over Age Other Ranks: Service Records, Second World War. Kew, Surrey, England: The National Archives, London, England.

General collection information

This collection contains more than 2 million service records for British infantry service members discharged as over age between 1939 and 1959. The records for personnel from the Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, Cavalry, and Guards Regiments are not included in this collection.

Many of the records are military attestation forms that contain personal information for each soldier. The collection also includes records of those who had joined the British Army Reserves prior to the Second World War and then saw service in the conflict.

Digitization of this collection is ongoing, and additional records will be added as they are digitized.

Using this collection

Records in this collection may include the following information:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Occupation
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Distinguishing marks
  • Next of kin
  • Regiment

The information in these records may help you learn about your ancestor’s military service during and after the Second World War. Learning what regiment your ancestor served in may allow you to find historical accounts of the activities of that regiment during the war. The records also may give you a basic understanding of your ancestor’s physical attributes.

An exploration of the record image may also tell you the parish, town, and county where your ancestor was born and their address at the time of enlistment. The records list military service rendered and whether a soldier was wounded or received medals or decorations.

* NB: This collection is only partially complete - digitisation is ongoing and future updates are planned. A recent article from Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine suggests that 106,000 records from the first batch.

About UK, British Army World War II Medal Cards, 1939-1945

This collection contains an index of cards with information about medals awarded by the British Army for service during the Second World War. Records include a link to the image available on Forces War Records and Fold3.

The cards served as applications for war service medals, including the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, and campaign stars that were awarded for service in specific theatres of the war. Veterans or their family members were required to submit an application to claim the appropriate medals, and many veterans didn’t file applications to receive their military honours.

It is believed that the medal index cards do not survive for members of the following regiments:

  • Royal Engineers
  • Royal Army Veterinary Corps
  • Royal Army Medical Corps
  • Royal Army Ordnance Corps
  • Auxiliary Territorial Service
  • Scots Guards
  • Leicestershire Regiment
  • Royal Warwickshire Regiment

About Poland and Great Britain, Polish Air Force in Great Britain, 1940-1947

This index-only collection captures over 16,000 Polish aviators who served in Great Britain during the Second World War. The index also includes service members who worked in other divisions of the Polish Air Force (PAF) in Britain—such as the Aviation Inspectorate—as well as Polish volunteers for the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF).

The index may include the following information:

  • Name
  • Service number
  • Rank and specialty
  • Date and place of birth
  • Date of death
  • Place of burial
  • Last known assignment/post
  • Military decorations
  • Last known residence

The names of Polish personnel were processed by British officers, so misspellings may have occurred. Consider different first name/surname variations during your search. If you locate a service number, you can use it to order service records from the Ministry of Defence. Such records can offer more details about a service member’s military career. https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/royal-air-force-personnel/ and https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records offer guidance on how to order and procure RAF service records.

Free Military Records Released to Commemorate D-Day

To mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, The Genealogist adds Enlistment Records to their Free Record Collections

In time to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day on 6th June, TheGenealogist has added United States WWII Army Enlistment Records (1938-1946) to its ever-growing Free Records Collection. In these records, we can find the names and particulars of American soldiers who joined up to serve their country and fight for freedom.

These records provide detailed information about enlistment dates, service branches, ranks, and more about US soldiers from this time.

While Operation Overlord, the code name for the Battle of Normandy, was an Allied operation consisting of British, Canadian and other Allied nations' troops, the Americans provided the bulk of the soldiers for the Liberation of Europe on 6 June 1945, and so this new record set will have many of the young men who fought in D-Day listed.

This new addition brings the total number of Free Records you can access on The Genealogist to over 10.9 Million. There’s a rich collection for researchers to sink their teeth into, with records dating back to 1086!

Simply register for free at The Genealogist to access:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/62690/
Source: Aberdeenshire School Admission Records. Aberdeen, Scotland: Aberdeen City Council.

This collection contains images of school admission registers produced in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, between 1856 and 1928. The registers are arranged in a ledger format with printed column headings and handwritten information about students. Important dates for each student and information about their family were recorded. The registers included an index of students arranged alphabetically by surname.

The index provides the page number where each student can be found in the register. For schools closed before 1975, the collection is divided into geographic groups. There are records from regular and special schools in the city of Aberdeen, and records for schools in Aberdeen County. The registers don't have pictures of the students or the names of schools where the students attended.

Records in this collection may include the following information:

  • Name
  • Gender
  • Birth date and place
  • Admission date
  • Discharge date
  • Parents' names
  • Mother's maiden name
  • Residence place
  • Year

ScotlandsPeople updates Scottish Women's Land Army collection

The ScotlandsPeople Scottish Women's Land Army collection includes the surviving index cards of the Scottish Women's Land Army and Timber Corps from 1939 to 1950. However, the collection also has an online barrier to access, with a closure period for those born less than one hundred years ago.

As part of its recent update, the site has now added more than 2000 records for women born in 1923 who served. You can search the collection at https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/advanced-search/employment-records/scottish-womens-land-army/swla#form (you need to be signed in).

ScotlandsPeople adds Women's Land Army and Timber Corps 1939-1950 index cards

From ScotlandsPeople (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk):

Scottish Women's Land Army records. Get digging!

To commemorate Remembrance Day, this newsletter explores the service of the Scottish Women’s Land Army and the Women’s Timber Corps.

These women played a vital role in the war effort, replacing men who had joined the forces during the Second World War. They contributed to the production of food and kept vital industries supplied with timber during the  war and its immediate aftermath.

Nearly 10,000 index cards for those who joined the Land Army and Timber Corps from 1939 to 1950 are now available for the first time on ScotlandsPeople. These records will help you trace an individual's service history and learn about the work of the Land Army and Timber Corps.

These records will be of particular interest to family historians hoping to learn more about the role their relatives played in the Second World War. Each card can give insight into the training given to new recruits, where they worked and reveal why they left their post. The records are currently available for those members who were born in 1922 and earlier.

Comment: To access the records visit the Employment Records section - or go directly to https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/advanced-search/employment-records/scottish-womens-land-army/swla#form

For the full news release visit https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/news/2023/land-girls-records-released-online

Note that these are index records, with an example below - the original service records themselves have not survived.

UK and Allies Bomber Command Losses database added to MyHeritage

Added to MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com):

United Kingdom and Allies, International Bomber Command Losses, 1936-1968

This collection contains death records of service members who died during service in the International Bomber Command of the UK and its allies, between 1936 and 1968. Records typically include the name of the deceased service member, country of birth, place of residence, date of death, age at the time of death, place of burial, names of the parents and spouse, and service information.

In World War II, Bomber Command was a division within the British Royal Air Force (RAF) responsible for conducting strategic bombing missions. The command was established in 1936 and played a pivotal role in the Allied air campaign against Germany and the Axis powers. In an effort to cripple the enemy’s war effort, Bomber Command’s aircrews conducted perilous missions to attack enemy industrial sites, transportation networks, and military installations.

The database can be searched at https://www.myheritage.com/research/collection-20667/united-kingdom-allies-international-bomber-command-losses-1936-1968 (subscription required to view results).

About UK and Allied Countries, World War II Liberated Prisoner of War Questionnaires, 1945-1946

General collection information

This collection comprises questionnaires filled out by prisoners of war who were liberated at the end of the Second World War in 1945. The questionnaires were given to thousands of British and Commonwealth soldiers captured by Germany, Italy, or Japan. The questionnaires provide information about various dates related to each soldier's military service and time as a prisoner of war. Some records may only have dates while others can provide rich details about the treatment of prisoners of war, attempts to escape, and the conditions in the camps in which they were held.

Using this collection

Records in this collection may include the following information:

  • Name
  • Rank
  • Service number
  • Ship name
  • Unit name
  • Birth date
  • Enlistment date
  • Capture date and place
  • Escape attempt details

The information in the questionnaires can be used to verify that enemy forces captured your ancestor at a specific place and time during the Second World War. You also may discover if your ancestor had any serious illnesses during captivity or if they witnessed any courageous acts by fellow prisoners of war. If your family member attempted to escape, you may find out about their evasive activities and any people who helped them during the attempt.

Further information can be found via the link above.

An issue with some Scottish 1939 National Identity Register entries

I made an interesting discovery this week concerning the Scottish National Identity Register entries from September 1939, recorded as an emergency wartime census two weeks into the Second World War. I had requested a copy of a record from the National Records of Scotland (www.nrscotland.gov.uk) to try to identify the date of birth of a Scottish born woman for whom a birth record cannot be located. Only one source was given for a date of birth, and that was that recorded for her birthdate on her English death record. As I did not know where she was in September 1939, or whether this birthdate was indeed correct, I requested that the NRS perform a look-up for the household of her family to try to pin her down. Two of her children were born in Scotland in the late 1930s, and I supplied their details in the hope that this could be used as a sideways method to pinpoint her location. The strategy worked, and an entry was found for her, which indeed listed a different date of birth.

The interesting discovery, however, concerned where the family was stated to be based. The address given was simply 'The Manse', with no burgh or town listed, and simply 'Perth' (i.e. Perthshire) listed as the county where located. There are a lot of manses in Perthhsire! Thinking this to be an omission by the person extracting the information, I queried this, and the entry was referred to the NHS Central Register (https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/nhs-central-register) held in Dumfries, where the original records are held. It transpired from the NHSCR representative that the Scottish records are not collated in the same way as the Scottish censuses, but in alphabetical order by 'NHS range' (I am still trying to clarify what this means exactly). The way that they are collated seemingly makes it more difficult to identify a location where folk were recorded if this is not identified on the page itself.

Nevertheless, from a subsequent dialogue with extract service manager Keith McKenzie, I was advised that from the context of other records it appeared to be an entry from the Forteviot/Dunning area, which tallied with a known area where she was later resident in November 1939, albeit at a different address. I was further advised that there were in fact a few families listed at 'The Manse' in prior and subsequent pages in the same register, none of which had the town listed either - it was suggested that this may have implied that the property housed families evacuated to Perthshire at the start of the war, with one possible location identified, which I am currently seeking further information on. The reason for the omission is simple - this was an emergency wartime census, and the box was simply not filled in on some schedules, as the enumerators sought to rapidly identify the names of individuals who would need identity cards.

The moral of this story is that if you receive a record which appears to have a deficiency, never be afraid to query it! In this case the NRS provided an extract exactly as requested of the information for the individual in question, as presented on the page - but the inability to see these original records, as can be done with the English and Welsh equivalents, makes it difficult to see the context of how the records were originally presented. The NRS system presents typed extracts from the register at £15. It is to be hoped at some stage in the future that the NRS can digitise the register, as has been done in England and Wales.

Note also that the ability to see a record from other possible collections, in its original context, can often yield cues and further information that cannot be viewed in a typed database. For example, an original record may contain a person's signature, or a baptism entry in a database may look totally different in a register when it might be found that it was added many years later and not at the time of the event, which may not be immediately apparent from a database, and which may prompt further questions such as why a late registration took place. ALWAYS try to see an original copy of a record where possible!
