Fold3 adds London Gazette notices from 1939-1945

We are pleased to announce a new collection of UK records on Fold3®. The UK, London Gazette WWII Military Notices 1939-1945 contains 1.3 million indexed records for service members found in the Military Notice sections or supplements of the London Gazette newspaper.

The London Gazette is Britain’s oldest continuously published newspaper. It is the authoritative source of government news and publishes notices related to elections, Royal proclamations and other declarations, appointments to public office, and more. Issues of the Gazette also include notices on military matters. This new collection consists of a searchable index of service members and the awards or mentions they received in the Gazette during the WWII years of 1939-1945. These notices include military awards or commendations, reports of people leaving service due to illness, appointments, promotions, and other military matters.

Fold3 adds Royal Navy Officer Patrol Service Cards

We have added a new UK collection of Royal Navy Officer Patrol Service Cards to our archives. These cards are dated 1904-1970 and can provide insights for those who served in the Royal Navy Patrol Service (RNPS). These records were created from microfilm held at The National Archives, with the original paper records located at the Imperial War Museum.

The RNPS was a branch of the Royal Navy whose origins date back to the Great War when the British Admiralty first realised the threat of mine warfare. The RNPS operated during both the First and Second World Wars.

COMMENT: Many Scots and Ulster Scots (Scotch-Irish) were involved in the Revolutionary War (19 April 1775 – 3 September 1783), with some historians referring to the conflict as a Presbyterian uprising. During the war, General George Washington stated "If defeated everywhere else I will make my last stand for liberty among the Scotch-Irish of my native Virginia". So you may well find one of your lot in there!
