MyHeritage Upgrades Its Consumer DNA Tests to Whole Genome Sequencing

From MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com), news of a big leap forward with its autosomal DNA testing:

MyHeritage Upgrades Its Consumer DNA Tests to Whole Genome Sequencing

TEL AVIV, Israel & LEHI, Utah & HOUSTON & FREMONT, California October 14 , 2025 — MyHeritage, the leading global platform for family history and DNA testing, announced today a landmark move to Whole Genome Sequencing for its at-home DNA test, MyHeritage DNA (www.myheritage.com/dna). Leveraging cutting-edge sequencing technology from Ultima Genomics and processing at the Gene by Gene lab, MyHeritage is the first major consumer DNA testing company to adopt Whole Genome Sequencing at a scale of more than one million tests per year. The enriched data will empower MyHeritage to deliver more accurate ethnicity analysis and DNA matching, and unlock opportunities for future innovation in consumer genomics and genetic genealogy.

Whole Genome Sequencing reads almost the entire human genetic code, covering around 3 billion base pairs (nucleotides). This is superior to the standard genotyping arrays used by most consumer DNA tests, including MyHeritage until recently, which read only about 700,000 base pairs. More data enables deeper insights across all types of genetic analysis. Whole Genome Sequencing is now being applied to most new MyHeritage DNA kits currently being processed at the lab, and to every new MyHeritage DNA kit sold moving forward. MyHeritage DNA kits already processed with the older genotyping array technology will not be reprocessed with Whole Genome Sequencing. Customers whose MyHeritage DNA kits are processed with Whole Genome Sequencing will be able to download their entire genome from MyHeritage at no cost, in CRAM format. They may also unlock additional insights by uploading their data to other trusted genetic service providers that support such uploads.

Due to its high technological potential, MyHeritage has been eying Whole Genome Sequencing for years. A pioneering study by the MyHeritage Science Team published in 2020 validated Whole Genome Sequencing for reliable relative matching at scale. Following that study, MyHeritage has been collaborating closely with Ultima Genomics since its emergence from stealth mode in mid-2022, and later jointly with Gene by Gene, to prepare the scientific and logistical foundation for upgrading the MyHeritage DNA processing pipeline to Whole Genome Sequencing using Ultima’s technology. The upgrade was completed successfully and creates new opportunities for MyHeritage to deliver deeper insights into ethnic origins, family connections, and genetic genealogy, without any price increase to consumers. Even before this upgrade, MyHeritage was consistently the most affordable DNA test on the market among the major DNA testing companies. The upgrade to Whole Genome Sequencing makes the MyHeritage offering even more compelling.

“This is a pivotal moment for genetic genealogy,” said Gilad Japhet, Founder and CEO of MyHeritage. “We are proud to take this pioneering step into Whole Genome Sequencing together with Ultima Genomics and with our longstanding partners at Gene by Gene. MyHeritage customers will enjoy the fruits of this technological upgrade for years to come, through increased accuracy, deeper insights, and exciting new products.”

“MyHeritage’s move to Whole Genome Sequencing marks a major milestone for consumer DNA testing,” said Dr. Gilad Almogy, Founder and CEO of Ultima Genomics. “It demonstrates the scalability and maturity of Ultima’s innovative technology and accelerates the immense value that Whole Genome Sequencing can bring to consumers. It has been a pleasure collaborating with MyHeritage over the past few years, and we are proud to work together with them and Gene by Gene to bring genetic genealogy to new heights for millions of consumers worldwide.”

“The transition to Whole Genome Sequencing represents the most ambitious project in our years-long partnership with MyHeritage,” said Dr. Lior Rauchberger, CEO of Gene by Gene. “We are proud to help set a new standard in consumer genomics and support the growth of what will soon become the world’s largest database of whole genomes. The rollout is centered at Gene by Gene’s state-of-the-art laboratory in Houston, Texas, which will house a large fleet of Ultima UG100™ sequencing instruments.”

Time for another annual ethnicity shake-up from Ancestry!

It's that time of the year when Ancestry (www.ancestry.co.uk) decides to change who we think we are, by reimagining our DNA ethnicity (admixture) profiles, due to its changing reference panel (to whom our results are matched).

Here's how the last three updates have tried to explain my ethnic origins to me.

Three updates ago:

  • Ireland and Scotland 65%
  • England, Wales & Northwestern Europe > Scottish Lowlands, Northern England, and Northern Ireland 35%

Two updates ago:

  • Scotland > Northern Ireland & Southwestern Tyrone / Fermanagh & Southwestern Tyrone / Eastern Northern Ireland and Southwestern Scotland 84%
  • Ireland 16%

Last update:

  • Scotland > Scottish Highlands 80%
  • Ireland > Ulster & Northern Ireland 20%

 And now...*drumroll*

  • Celtic & Gaelic: Central Scotland & Northern Ireland 72% ; Hebrides & Western Highlands, Scotland 23% ; Munster, Ireland 2%
  • England: East Midlands 2%
  • Western Europe: Northwestern Germany 1%

So they all agree that I am a mixture of Scottish and Irish, which is basically the Northern Irish story in its own right, although I also have direct Scottish lineage with my paternal grandparents.

Tune in next year for the next exciting update of "What the Hell is Chris....?"!!!!

Scottish GENES Webinar - Using DNA for Family History Research: A Beginner's Guide

As I have an extensive library of genealogy talks, I've decided to create a series of monthly Scottish GENES webinars at an affordable rate, which I hope you might be interested to attend! Along the way I will also offer brand new talks, and won't just confine myself to Scottish and Irish themed topics, as there is a lot to discuss in the big, wide genealogy world. The first of these sessions is detailed below, I hope you can come along!

Using DNA for Family History Research: A Beginner's Guide
Saturday 20th September 2025 at 7.00pm UK time. Webinar fee: UK £10.

In this session, I will provide a jargon-free introduction for beginners on how DNA can be used for family history research to break down brick wall problems. As well as offering a brief overview of the history of DNA, and an introduction to how various DNA tests are used in certain situations, I will also highlight three case studies from my own ancestral research where DNA has offered answers to problems which the paper trail alone could not resolve.

So if DNA as a topic has previously terrified you, seemed too complex, or you didn't know that there was more you could with your results beyond checking your ethnicity (!), this session will give you a sense of why so many people today are turning to it as a research tool, and some of the ways that it can help to resolve those irritating brick wall issues!

(For those unable to attend on the night, a video recording will be made available of the session which will be viewable for one week after it takes place). After the session there will be an opportunity for Q&As.

I hope that you can join me on this first session, which I hope will be the first of many more if there is enough support!

To register for the talk, please visit https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_6zmDVN02S16qflkpYCAFTg#/registration - and I hope to maybe see you there!

New look for LivingDNA portal

LivingDNA (http://livingdna.com) has had a revamp. Here's the blurb from the email:

Get ready to explore your ancestry and health like never before!

Our brand-new online portal has been completely redesigned to give you a fresh, seamless experience while keeping all the features you know and love.

With an intuitive interface and improved navigation, discovering your family history and unlocking valuable health insights has never been easier. Whether you're tracing your roots or exploring personalised wellness information, everything is now more accessible, engaging, and user-friendly.

I'm not a big fan of the platform, as I find it to be too weighted towards things I have no interest in (e.g. 'Neanderthal' and 'Viking' DNA, as well as 'Wellbeing' tests), and not enough easy to use functionality to determine how you relate to distant cousins - but if you have an account, you may wish to check out the new look.

Ancestry DNA's ethnicity update makes me a different type of Scot!

There's been a curious update to Ancestry's ethnicity profiling on its DNA platform. Before the update I was shown as being 84% Scottish, with a subgroup of Northern Ireland and Southwest Scotland, which comprised of three groups - Western Northern Ireland, Fermanagh and Southwest Tyrone, and Eastern Northern Ireland and Southwestern Scotland. That did reflect my Scottish ancestry to quite a good extent, with most of my "Scottish" identity coming from Plantation stock in Ulster (Scots who migrated to Ulster from 1609), although it neglected the Gaelic quarter of my identity that is in fact Highland Scottish, from Invernessshire, Perthshire and Easter Ross.

Switching now to the new ethnicity reading, and the Ulster Plantations have seemingly never happened. I am now shown as 80% Highland Scottish, and 20% Irish, from Ulster and Northern Ireland. Whilst I am delighted that my Highland ancestry has finally been realised, I wasn't expecting the other three quarters of my Scottish ethnicity to be swallowed up in a single area that seems to draw the Highland line from Glasgow to Dunbar!!!

And just for the craic, my wife, whose family has exclusively been drawn from Kilkenny and Tipperary in Ireland for the last 200 years, is now shown as having ancestry from all four provinces in Ireland, as well as now being 9% Scottish. Errr... no!

I was thinking Ancestry may have repeated the mistake it made a few years ago when everyone was suddenly Scottish for a few glorious weeks, but from the comments I have seen on social media it looks like a lot of people are equally confused by their new ethnicity statements.

Take one very important point to heart - the ethnicity reading should not be too closely worried about - the far more useful thing to take from Ancestry's tests is the possibility of matches with distant cousins who share DNA with you.

But fair play to you if you have shares in a kilt company just now, I suspect you'll be getting a few more enquiries from folk once again wishing to trade in their lederhosen ...!!!

23andMe's independent board directors resign

More bad news for DNA company 23andMe (www.23andme.com), which has not been having a good time of it of late:

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Sept. 17, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The independent directors of the Board of 23andMe Holding Co. (Nasdaq: ME), today sent the following letter to Anne Wojcicki, Chief Executive Officer, Co-Founder, and Chair of the Board of Directors of 23andMe, in which the independent directors have provided their resignation from the Board, effective immediately:

Dear Anne,

We, the independent directors of the 23andMe Board, hereby tender our resignations, effective immediately.

After months of work, we have yet to receive from you a fully financed, fully diligenced, actionable proposal that is in the best interests of the non-affiliated shareholders. We believe the Special Committee and the Board have provided ample time for you to submit such a proposal. That we have not seen any notable progress over the last 5 months leads us to believe no such proposal is forthcoming. The Special Committee is therefore unwilling to consider further extensions, and the Board agrees with the Special Committee’s determination.

While we continue to wholeheartedly support the Company’s mission and believe deeply in the value of the personalized health and wellness offering that you have articulated, it is also clear that we differ on the strategic direction for the Company going forward. Because of that difference and because of your concentrated voting power, we believe that it is in the best interests of the Company’s shareholders that we resign from the Board rather than have a protracted and distracting difference of view with you as to the direction of the Company.

We are proud of what 23andMe has achieved in pioneering direct access to genetic information, and we have been honored to have had the opportunity to be part of those efforts.

Sincerely,

/s/

Roelof Botha, Patrick Chung, Sandra Hernández, M.D., Neal Mohan, Valerie Montgomery Rice M.D., Richard Scheller, Ph.D., Peter J. Taylor

FamilyTreeDNA partnership with MyHeritage

Apologies, I've been a bit tardy with this one! From Daniel Horowitz at MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com), concerning a new collaboration between MyHeritage and Family TreeDNA (www.familytreedna.com):

I’m delighted to announce the launch of a new collaboration between the two companies. This collaboration, which includes integration between the MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA websites, enables FamilyTreeDNA customers to transfer their family trees to MyHeritage, and to continue building them on MyHeritage. FamilyTreeDNA users can now easily transfer their family trees to MyHeritage for free, after providing consent on both FamilyTreeDNA and MyHeritage.

This collaboration expands the two companies’ longstanding partnership, and will provide FamilyTreeDNA customers with access to MyHeritage’s robust suite of genealogy tools and features, many of which are not available on FamilyTreeDNA.

This strategic decision allows FamilyTreeDNA to focus on its expertise in DNA testing services and reporting, while providing its users with access to the powerful family tree tools and technologies offered by MyHeritage.

To facilitate this collaboration, MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA have developed a technical integration that now enables FamilyTreeDNA users to seamlessly transfer their family tree data to MyHeritage. This process is voluntary; however, transferring the tree data to MyHeritage is encouraged, as FamilyTreeDNA will officially sunset their family tree builder on September 9, 2024. At that point, all family trees on FamilyTreeDNA will become read-only. It will still be possible to transfer trees from FamilyTreeDNA to MyHeritage after this date, but this functionality may not be available forever, so the sooner the transfer is done, the better. Access to DNA results on FamilyTreeDNA will remain unchanged.

For further details visit https://blog.myheritage.com/2024/07/new-collaboration-with-familytreedna/.

DNA proof paves way to an Irish passport

There's an interesting article in the Irish Times showing how a US academic called John Portmann was successfully able to use DNA proof via Ancestry.com to gain an Irish passport. Portmann was able to show through his DNA research that his father was from Dublin ad his mother from Co. Kilkenny, albeit following a court case in Arizona, USA. You can read the article at https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2024/07/21/dna-detectives-help-adopted-american-man-who-never-knew-biological-parents-to-obtain-irish-citizenship/.

A reminder that there is a useful gudie to obtaining an Irish passport on the RootsIreland website at https://www.rootsireland.ie/help/help-civil-records/how-to-apply-for-an-irish-passport/, and that my own journey to obtain Irish passports for myself and my two sons here in Scotland has been documented on this blog, starting at http://britishgenes.blogspot.com/2016/06/claiming-irish-passport-1.html.

This is quite a shock - the Ancestry Pro-Tools subscription, which I blogged about earlier in the week at https://scottishgenes.blogspot.com/2024/06/ancestry-protools-subscription-rolled.html, following its release in the UK, has just shot up from £4.99 a month to £7.99.

Ancestry ProTools subscription rolled out to UK - includes DNA Enhanced Shared Matches tool

Ancestry is now making available its new ProTools subscription, at £4.99 a month. This adds a few bells and whistles for you to help check your tree and to search your DNA results.

By far the most useful tool is its new Enhanced Shared Matches facility for DNA results. This basically allows you to note how many centimorgans both you and a match may share with other matches, and how you and the other match may be related to any other shared matches. I've been exploring it for a couple of days now, and whilst I have not made any breakthroughs yet using it, it certainly is a worthwhile enhancement - although it is a bit of a poor show that it can only be accessed by paying for yet another subscription on top of the one I already have. There's more on the tool at https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/AncestryDNA-Shared-Matches?language=en_US.

I intend to use this upgrade for a month, without renewing, but may upgrade from time to time for short periods to carry out additional research.

I'm not too bothered by the other offerings in the subscription, but you can read more about Ancestry's ProTools at https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Ancestry-Pro-Tools-Membership.

Saturday and Sunday at the OGS conference in Toronto

I'm currently at Toronto Pearson Airport, a few hours away from flying home, after a wonderful Ontario Genealogical Society conference. This was my first visit to the city in seven years, but my fourth here over the last 14 years, and it was wonderful to catch up with so many friends made over the years - Linda Reid, who first showed me around the city 14 years ago, and James Thomson from the OGS Toronto branch, Steve and Diana Fulton, who hosted me at St. Catherine's/Niagara ten years ago, Ken McKinlay, who looked after me in Ottawa at the BIFHSGO conference, and so, so many other folk.

Friday saw the informal start to my conference, with a two-hour workshop, but Saturday and Sunday were the main events for me. Kicking everything off was my morning plenary session entitled Reimagining Genealogy, in which I took stock of where we are just now, and what is to come, particularly with Artificial Intelligence (AI). I made some observations about some recent online developments, some enthusiastic, some asking whether the balance was right, with a few laughs along the way, but by far the biggest response I got afterwards was with regards to my comments on the use of Zoom and other online platforms, asking whether this new form of community was killing off another form of community needlessly. It resonated with a few folk, this being OGS's first major in-person gathering in five years, and what made the weekend feel so special was the fact that it felt like everyone actually needed it. The more technology tries to confine us behind devices, the more we absolutely have to fight to remain as a community that actually enjoys what we do, and to fight to connect as human beings, not just as digital avatars. AI and online communications platforms are here to stay and are massively important, offering significant new avenues to research and engage, but we must not become slaves to it.

On a personal note, another great opportunity that emerged after the session was a chance to speak to a local gentleman from Toronto who spoke Scottish Gaelic, I having used it at one stage in my presentation. The last time I spoke to anyone in Canada in Gaelic was in 1999, some 25 years ago, so it was a wonderful chance to do so again. Not all Gaels live in Scotland! (Or Ireland!)

My afternoon session on new resources and tools for Scotland was warmly received, particularly with regards to my reveals on the new Your Scottish Archives project, coming soon, thanks to the Scottish Council on Archives. Also on Saturday I attended a fascinating session entitled Ancestors Stories: Traps and Guides with actor R. H. Thomson, who has been fighting to document the names of everyone who died in the First World War. I also attended a DNA panel discussion featuring fellow Norn Iron compadre Jonny Perl, as well as Blaine Bettinger, Mags Gaulden (another possible Islandmagee cousin - would you believe it?!), and Diane Southard. It was the first time I have heard Blaine speak in person, with some interesting insight into the use of AI in DNA - he coined the word "whiplash" in regards to what he thinks we will experience over the next few years in trying to catch up with how AI is going to affect genetic genealogy, something to prepare for!

After the day's programme it was time for the grand banquet, where I had a chance to catch up with colleagues from the APG, including Theresa McVean and Dawn Carey Henry, as well as to chat with International Institute of Genealogical Studies director, Angela Breidenbach, before we listened to Paul Jones' fun presentation, Seeking Perfection One Mistake at a Time.

Today then, Sunday, saw me discusing the latest developments on Irish genealogy, including discussions on the Virtual Records Treasury, Irish Palatine resources, new census resources, and much more, which was again warmly received. After lunch, my conference ended with a fun Q&A panel featuring myself, and fellow genie compadres Paul Milner, John Reid, and Dianne Brydon. We had a lot of fun bouncing ideas off each other and with the audience. Due to my flight schedule I had to forego the final get together, but managed to say goodbye to some folk before I left.

As well as the OGS, I think this conference was also needed by me personally. In recent years, as the work of genealogy has become ever more isolated and isolationist, not least because of the recent pandemic and technological changes, I have been having something of a crisis of faith in considering my role as a working genealogist, and this was hugely reinvigorating as an experience. I learned so much from so many people, and I am returning to Scotland all fired up and excited about future developments and the road ahead. I'll be back over to this side of the Atlantic next year - but more on that in due course!

To all at the OGS, a huge and sincere thanks for bringing me over once more to speak to you all - and I look forward to hopefully catching up with you all again at some stage in the future.

Tioraidh an-dràsta!

Cancer gene traced back to Shetland island of Whalsay pre-1750

There's an interesting story on the BBC about how a DNA propject, Viking Genes (see http://scottishgenes.blogspot.com/2022/10/viking-genes-project-seeks-volunteers.html), has allowed scientists to determine that a particular cancer cauing gene has been traced back to the island of Whalsay, and to a family living there prior to 1750.
