LiveStory - MyHeritage's speaking ghosts

From MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com):

MyHeritage Releases LiveStory, A Groundbreaking Feature That Automatically Creates Video Biographies, Using D-ID Pioneered AI Technology

Tel Aviv, Israel, and Lehi, Utah, March 3, 2022 — MyHeritage, the leading global service for discovering your past and empowering your future, and Creative Reality™ startup D-ID, announced today the release of LiveStory, a groundbreaking new feature that creates captivating video biographies. LiveStory automatically produces an animated video of a user’s ancestor telling their life story, weaving together photos and details of their life into a narrative that is told by a speaking portrait of the person.

LiveStory is powered by some of the most advanced AI technologies available today. The technology for the speaking portrait was licensed by MyHeritage from D-ID, a company specializing in video reenactment using deep learning. MyHeritage first integrated D-ID’s technology in Deep Nostalgia™ to animate the faces in historical photos. Deep Nostalgia™ launched in February 2021 to wide acclaim and became a global sensation. MyHeritage soared to the #1 spot in the app stores in over 30 countries, and since its launch, nearly 100 million animations have been created. With LiveStory, MyHeritage and D-ID take this concept further by adding audio and building a compelling narrative of a person’s life events. The narrative is created automatically from the user’s family tree on MyHeritage, or entered manually, and is converted to high-quality audio using text-to-speech technology. Cutting-edge reenactment technology then animates the person’s face and mouth to speak the audio by generating a realistic lip sync. The animation is automatically enhanced with photos curated from the family tree, or uploaded and paired with the narrative. This results in short and engaging videos that users can download, share directly with family and friends, and post on social media.

Where Deep Nostalgia™ amazed millions by animating the faces of beloved ancestors, its successor, LiveStory, gives voice to one’s most interesting family stories in a remarkable new way. LiveStory is fully customizable; the narrative, photographs, and voice can all be edited and previewed until the desired result is achieved. LiveStory currently supports 31 languages, dozens of dialects, and hundreds of voice personas, as well as male and female voice options.

MyHeritage has established a policy to prevent abuse of the technology and the creation of “deep fakes”. LiveStory is intended to be used only on photos of deceased people, typically one’s own ancestors, and should never be used on a photo of a living person without their permission. Use of content that is obscene, false, or offensive is expressly prohibited.

Some may find the feature uncanny, however, initial reactions to LiveStory have been outstanding. Noted genealogist James Tanner called the feature “jaw-dropping” and “more than fabulous” after seeing a LiveStory of his grandfather. Writer, author, and renowned lecturer Lisa Alzo was moved to tears by a LiveStory of her late father and said, “I am in awe of this technology. LiveStory gives us a whole new way to experience and share family stories that will resonate with younger and older audiences alike, and is particularly useful for generating video biographies of people who lived before video was invented.”

“LiveStory takes storytelling to the next level,” said Gilad Japhet, Founder and CEO of MyHeritage. “With this latest viral feature, MyHeritage continues to lead the world of online family history in both vision and innovation. Our use of AI to breathe new life into historical photos is unique and is helping millions of people cultivate a renewed emotional connection with their ancestors and deceased loved ones. Genealogy is all about telling and preserving our family stories. We keep showing the world how fun and compelling genealogy can be.”

“Following the dizzying success of Deep Nostalgia™, we are thrilled to team up with MyHeritage once again to create another mind-blowing experience that will change the way people interact with family history,” said Gil Perry, Co-Founder and CEO of D-ID. “LiveStory leverages AI-powered video reenactment to give voice to the stories of our ancestors. We are delighted by such a moving and inspiring application for our technology and our strong, ongoing partnership with MyHeritage.”

LiveStory is a freemium feature on MyHeritage, available on desktop, mobile web, and the MyHeritage mobile app. Users can create several LiveStories for free. Beyond that, additional use requires a subscription. LiveStories can easily be shared with friends and family on Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and other social media.

The LiveStory tool is available at https://www.myheritage.com/livestory

COMMENT: I had a sneak preview of this last night, and tried it with an image of my Scottish great grandfather. I can get the image portrayed to talk to me in an English accent, an Irish accent, and an American accent. But he was Scottish - and so that was it for me!

The technology is a little unnerving. With the animated images previously released, I felt like I could stretch the imagination a little - might this be how an ancestor looked when they moved? But this latest step for me is a step too far. It bursts that well known media concept of the 'wilful suspension of disbelief' to accept something as being real, and I was in no way convinced by a barely conceiveable animated manequin talking in a completely unrealistic accent. So this one is definitely not for me.

Perhaps it's time to concentrate more on the genealogy side of things?!

RootsTech 2022 now underway

From FamilySearch (www.familysearch.org):

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (3 March 2022)—More than one million people from over 225 countries and territories are looking for new family connections and discoveries at RootsTech 2022 online (March 3-5, 2022). The popular, free virtual event celebrates family heritage and offers over 1,500 ways to participate, including learning sessions, celebrity keynotes, cultural activities, an interactive expo hall, live discussion forums, innovative product demonstrations, and free family history consultations. Join the fun now at RootsTech.org.

RootsTech 2022 is in its 11th year and is the largest event of its kind with over one million participants and many more expected. The fun line-up of celebrity keynotes includes Stranger Things’ Matthew Modine, Girl Meets Farm star Molly Yeh, and Argentine Grammy winner, Diego Torres. Visit the RootsTech main stage to view the full schedule of daily keynote speakers.

Jonathan Wing, manager for the RootsTech main stage, said a goal for 2022 was to create content that resonates with participants personally. “In 2021, our first all-virtual event, we learned a lot about how people consume online content. They want shorter, more engaging content,” said Wing.

At RootsTech 2022, Wing said this learning was applied to some of the keynote speakers who will be featured on the RootsTech virtual mainstage. “We decided to take a more personal approach with some of our keynote speakers. In these instances, we are there, with them, in their homes, in their space, in their hometowns, hearing their personal stories about family and connection. It was very special. It was a very different feeling. I’m excited for viewers to see it. When they (keynotes) are surrounded by reminders of all their stories and the personal memories that have influenced them, it’s a very different viewing experience,” mused Wing.

RootsTech 2022 offers more than 1,500 learning sessions on 185 topics in more than 30 languages.  Viewers can create custom playlists of sessions they would like to watch now or later during the year. Popular topics include DNA, family history search, research help, technology, travel, storytelling, and connection.

Relatives at RootsTech is another fun experience where online participants can discover their connections with relatives around the world. The feature shows how participants are related and gives them a way to connect if desired. The experience will be available until March 26, 2022.

RootsTech is hosted by FamilySearch and sponsored by Ancestry, MyHeritage, and FamilyTreeDNA. The interactive RootsTech Expo Hall features 100 sponsors and exhibitors. Although virtual, the Expo Hall experiences allow participants to watch exciting, innovative, and informative product demonstrations and to interact with exhibitors live online.

Join the fun, and make new family connections now at RootsTech 2022, March 3-5, 2022, at RootsTech.org.

5 week Progressing Your Irish Research Online course starts April 4th

Hi folks,

My 5 week long course Progressing Your Irish Research Online, taught through Pharos Teaching and Tutoring Ltd (www.pharostutors.com), kicks off again on April 4th 2022, and I am very much looking forward to getting started with it! To book one a place please visit https://www.pharostutors.com/details.php?coursenumber=260.

Here is some further information about the course:

There is a common belief that if you have Irish ancestors then you should give up hope of finding out about them, because 'nothing survived the fire', referring to the destruction of Ireland's Public Record Office during the Civil War in 1922. The overall aim of this course is to point out that this is a nonsense, and that the glass is half full and not empty. Whilst there are certainly challenges to be overcome, a great deal can still be accomplished with the many resources now rapidly finding their way online.

This course will describe the many state created records and church records that can be used to research your Irish ancestry. It will provide a context to understand why they were created, and by whom and point out exactly where to find them online, and how to use them effectively.

Lesson Headings:
  • Understanding Ireland's boundaries, key repositories and platforms
  • The vital records of Church and State
  • Documenting the people: Irish censuses and substitutes
  • Valuation records and inheritance
  • The Decade of Centenaries
Each lesson includes exercises and activities and a minimum of 1 one-hour chat per week.

And if it helps, a brief introductory video explaining what it will hopefully achieve!

(Also available at https://youtu.be/aonRMQEnIFw)

I hope to perhaps see you there!

MyHeritage (www.myheritage.com) has laucnhed a new podcast:

The Blast From My Past podcast will feature the incredible true stories of people whose lives were changed by what they discovered through MyHeritage about their family’s pasts — whether it was a close relative they never knew existed, the key to unlocking an old family mystery, or a newfound connection to a long-forgotten legacy.

Our debut episode, “The Secret of Ereikoussa,” drops today! It tells the story of Yvette Corporan, a bestselling author, and Emmy Award-winning producer who set out on a quest to confirm the extraordinary story her grandmother told her: that the Greek Island community where she grew up conspired to hide a Jewish family right under the noses of their Nazi occupiers. Listeners will follow along as Yvette digs for clues, and, with the assistance of MyHeritage CEO Gilad Japhet, makes discoveries beyond what she had ever imagined. This episode is just the first in a series of breathtaking and deeply moving stories. We can’t wait to share the rest of them with you!

ScotlandsPeople to reinstate fuzzy search tool

A big thanks to Dee Williams at ScotlandsPeople (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) for advising me this morning that having reviewed their decision last week to remove the fuzzy search and name variant tools (see http://scottishgenes.blogspot.com/2022/02/scotlandspeople-explains-recent-search.html), the centre has decided upon reflection, and after receiving feedback from several folk, that they will reintroduce the fuzzy search tool. This will not happen immediately, but at the next system update.

The name variants option is a bit more problematic, as it does not work properly apparently, and will take some time and effort to address before its reintroduction.

(Thanks to Dee, and to colleagues within the Scottish Genealogy Network, including Michael Tobias and Fergus Smith)

Scottish Family History Month presentations available until end of March

February's Scottish Family History Month from Family Tree and History Scotland magazines is now over, but it is still possible to purchase access to recordings of all five presentations, which will be available until the end of March. The talks were as follows:

  • Making sense of the Scottish census, by Emma Maxwell
  • Civil cases in the sheriff courts, by Fergus Smith
  • Scottish research resources before 1800, by Chris Paton
  • Tracing Scottish women, by Kirsty Wilkinson
  • Using DNA for Scottish family history research, by Michelle Leonard

It was a real pleasure to hosts the sessions, there was certainly a great mix of topics, and some great content within each talk, as well as some fun questions and answers after each.

Each session is individually £10 to view, or £40 for a bundle of all five - if you have a subscription to either of the magazines, that bundle price drops further to £35.

Enjoy!
