Ancestry has released the following sets of vital records indexes online for Australia:
Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1778
Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1949
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1780
Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1779
Visit each of the search pages for detailed information on the commencement of civil registration in each state. Note that these are indexes and not digitised certificates, though the information supplied can help you to source the records from the appropriate registrars down under.

Researching Scottish Family History (New book)
Chris, Have just tested out the new Australian BDMs on Ancestry - there appear to be some holes.
ReplyDeleteFor deaths of Pusell there are only 12 records for the whole of Asutralia; on the free NSW Registry indexes (http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/)that give the same amount of information there are 27 records for NSW!
As for births Ancestry lists 20 (for the whole of Australia) the same number as the NSW indexes list.
Ancestry lists 80 Pusell marriages whilst the NSW index lists 19 male and 36 female marriages.
The lesson here is that one should check multiple sources.
